Biografie

Ada Hegerberg made history in 2018 by becoming the first woman to win the Ballon d'Or Féminin.

Born in Molde, Hegerberg followed elder sister Andrine to Norwegian Toppserien club Kolbotn IL. Weeks after her 16th birthday, Ada became the youngest woman to score a hat-trick in Norway's top flight and was her side's leading scorer that season. She was also named 2011 Toppserien Young Player of the Year.

In 2012, both Hegerberg sisters moved to league runners-up Stabaek. Ada's 25 goals in 18 matches made her the league's topscorer although the side had to settle for second again as LSK Kvinner took the title.

The sisters were soon on the move again, this time to German outfit 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. While Andrine made a quick exit after refusing to play for coach Bernd Schröder, Ada stayed to help Turbine to second place in the Women's Bundesliga and the German Cup. Wolfsburg beat them in both competitions as they completed a league, cup and UEFA Champions League treble.

Hegerberg joined French giants Olympique Lyonnais Féminin in 2014 and helped the side continue their dominance of domestic and continental competitions. In her first season, she scored 34 goals in all competitions as Lyon completed a fourth consecutive league and cup double.

In 2015-16, she notched up an incredible 54 goals in 35 games - including 13 in nine Champions League matches - as Lyon regained Europe's top trophy in a famous treble. They repeated that feat in 2016-17.

The 2017-18 season saw Hegerberg score 53 goals in 33 games in all competitions with 15 of those coming in the Champions League. Her exploits earned her the inagural Ballon d'Or Féminin award, although her achievement was overshadowed by host Martin Solveig asking if she wanted to dance to celebrate the prize and whether she knew how to 'twerk'. Hegerberg said "no" in response to the DJ who was accused of sexism, although she later said she did not see his actions as sexual harassment.

Lyon went on to win five consecutive French League and Champions League doubles with Hegerberg's goals pivotal to their success. Since the 2006-07 season, they have completely dominated the French League with only Paris Saint-Germain posing a threat in the last couple of years.

Ada Hegerberg: International goals, boycott and return

Hegerberg made her Norway senior debut at 16 in November 2011. She was picked for the 2013 European Championship in Sweden and scored in Norway's quarter-final win over Spain. She started as the team's sole striker in the final, but could not stop Germany claiming a sixth consecutive title.

At the 2015 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Hegerberg scored three goals in the group stages to help send Norway through to the round of 16 where they fell 2-1 to England. However, in the summer of 2017, she quit the national team in protest at the Norwegian Football Federation's treatment of the women's game and missed the 2019 World Cup.

Following the appointment of Lise Klaveness as NFF president, Hegerberg announced her return to the national team set-up in March 2022 after five years away. In her first game back, a World Cup qualifier against Kosovo, she scored a hat-trick in a 5-1 home win.

At the 2023 World Cup, Hegerberg played the whole 90 minutes as Norway lost the tournament opener 1-0 to co-hosts New Zealand. She suffered a groin injury in the warm-up ahead of their second match with Switzerland, and only returned as a substitute in the round-of-16 defeat to Japan.

Norway were Olympic champions at Sydney 2000 and reached the quarter-finals at Beijing 2008. They have not qualified since with Hegerberg still waiting to make her Olympic debut.
