Marjorie Nelson-Jackson was the supreme female sprinter of the early 1950s. She won the Olympic sprint double in 1952, and at the Commonwealth Games, she won seven sprint gold medals, as follows: 1950 and 1954 100 yards and 220 yards doubles, the 110-220-110 yards relay (with Shirley Strickland and Verna Johnston) and the 220-110-220-110 yards relay (with Shirley Strickland, Verna Johnston, and the non-Olympian Ann Shanley) in 1950, and the 4×110 yards relay (with Winsome Cripps and the non-Olympians Gwen Wallace and Nancy Fogarty) in 1954. Jackson set six individual world records, four in the 100 and two in the 200, and ran on the Australian 4×100 relay that set a world record in the heats at the 1952 Olympics. In 2001 Marjorie Jackson was appointed Governor of South Australia, a position in which she served until relinquishing it in July 2007.
