The daughter of Romanian immigrants, Sabrina Ionescu was born and raised in California before going on to rewrite history in college basketball.
Despite having been mooted as a possible top pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft, she opted to stay for her senior year at the University of Oregon having led the Ducks to the NCAA Final Four.
While that 2020 season was curtailed prematurely by the pandemic, Ionescu became the NCAA leader in triple-doubles and the sole player, male or female, to achieve over 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, and 1,000 assists. Attendances swelled to over 10,000 and she was later named as one of the greatest Ducks in history alongside American football star Marcus Mariota, running hero Steve Prefontaine, and Nike co-founder Phil Knight.
After winning a second John R. Wooden Award as the most outstanding women's college basketball player, she was selected first by the New York Liberty in the 2020 WNBA Draft.
