The following year, Keys made her Olympic debut in singles at Rio 2016. She again reached the semi-finals before going down to Kerber. And in the bronze medal match, Kvitova gained revenge in three sets.

The American has won seven singles titles during a career blighted by injury. Three of those successes have come on grass, but her biggest win came in the 2019 Cincinnati Open which remains her sole WTA 1000 triumph.

Keys reached her only Grand Slam final at the 2017 US Open, falling to her friend Sloane Stephens. The pair also met in the Roland-Garros semi-finals in 2018 with Stephens again victorious. After a couple of lean years, Keys enjoyed a revival in 2022 as she returned to the Australian Open semi-finals. In 2023, she won a second Eastbourne title before making the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

After beating Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the US Open quarter-finals, she took the opening set 6-0 against Aryna Sabalenka. Having failed to serve out the match at 5-4 in the second, Keys went on to lose two tiebreaks and make a tearful exit.
