Ueli Maurer proposed for election to the IOC Ethics Commission

The IOC Executive Board has decided to propose to the IOC Session the election of the former President of the Swiss Confederation, Ulrich “Ueli” Maurer, as a member of the IOC Ethics Commission.

Mr Maurer is being proposed for election as an independent member of the Ethics Commission for a four-year term, starting on 1 January 2023, as a successor of Mr Samuel Schmid, who is also a former President of the Swiss Confederation, and has reached the end of his non-renewable term. The election will take place by postal vote in the coming days.

Mr Maurer was the President of the Swiss Confederation in 2013 and in 2019. He has been a Swiss Federal Councillor since 2009, Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport from 2009 to 2015, and Head of the Federal Department of Finance from 2016 to the present.

Of the nine members of the IOC Ethics Commission, four are IOC Members, one of whom must be an Athletes’ Commission member. The other five members are prominent personalities known for their independence of spirit, competence and international reputation.
