IOC elects Milan as host of the IOC Session in 2019

Speaking in Lima, Evaluation Commission Chair Ser Miang Ng congratulated the Milano team on an outstanding presentation. He then said, “This visit [of the Evaluation Commission] confirmed that Milan has the capacity and capability to host a very successful 2019 IOC Session.” And he concluded that, “based on all that we’ve found, as well as the presentation by Milano, it is the recommendation of the Commission that the Session gives the 2019 IOC Session to Milan.”

The Milan bid was represented by Italian NOC (CONI) President, Giovanni Malagò; the Mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala; three-time Olympic canoe champion Antonio Rossi, the Councillor for Sport of the Lombardy Region; the Sport Councillor of Milan City, Roberta Guaineri; Deputy General Secretary of CONI and Olympic medallist Carlo Mornati; and Olympic medallist Diana Bianchedi, Coordinator of the Milan bid for the IOC Session.

Mayor Sala underlined Milan’s excitement about hosting the Session, “We want the 2019 Session to be the starting point of lasting and fruitful collaboration with the IOC.” He continued, “I would like to highlight the fact that the key ingredient of the city’s achievements is the enthusiasm of my fellow citizens for international events. They do not just accept these initiatives, but fall in love with them. And as sports lovers themselves, I know that they will warmly welcome IOC delegates as carriers of the world sport values, as well as contribute to instil a feeling of excitement.”

CONI President Giovanni Malagò outlined the compact nature of Milan’s plan for the IOC Session, “We have presented a compact project that includes all events within a 4-km radius, which can be reached in a maximum of 15 minutes.” He went on, “The IOC Executive Board will be hosted at the Principe di Savoia hotel, which has a meeting room capacity of over 3,000 square metres. The Session opening ceremony will be held at La Scala, one of the oldest and most prestigious opera theatres in the world, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, Sergio Mattarella. We will show you our extensive repertoire of Italian music and our cultural traditions. The Session will be held at the MiCo, that is, the Milano Congressi, 15 minutes from the Olympic Family Hotels.”

Finally, Antonio Rossi, presented the important role of sport in Lombardy, “We are working on many different projects regarding facilities, social commitment, sports education in schools, assistance to families in economic trouble, education for sports basic training as well as for high-level and Olympic sport. I also add sport as an economic and tourism development opportunity, as fun and free time, as an aggregation tool and a very important one for our health.”
