ioc launches new homepageA day ahead of the two-year countdown to Beijing 2008, the Organising Committee for the Beijing Games (BOCOG) has launched the pictograms that will identify each of the sports on the Olympic programme in two years’ time. The images, which have been approved by the 28 summer International Federations and by the IOC, will be widely used during the Games, as they appear on signage, adverts, souvenirs, official publications, TV images and many other forms of visual communication.
“Beauty Of Seal Characters”
Called “the beauty of seal characters” and with strokes of seal characters as their basic form, the Beijing 2008 pictograms combine the charm of inscriptions on bone and bronze objects from ancient China with the simplified embodiment of modern graphics. Using the effect of sharp contrast between black and white colours, which are typical of the traditional Chinese art of rubbings, the pictograms display distinct motion, the graceful aesthetic perception of movement and rich cultural connotations, thus arriving at the harmony and unity of form with conception.
There are 35 different icons, which cover all of the 28 Olympic summer sports. The icons represent athletics, rowing, badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing, canoe / kayak flatwater, canoe / kayak slalom, cycling, equestrian, fencing, football, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, wrestling, swimming, synchronised swimming, diving, water polo, modern pentathlon, softball, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, volleyball and beach volleyball.
BOCOG called upon four professional design institutes and organisations in March 2005 to make proposals for the pictogram design. The designs based on “seal characters” by the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and on “string” by the Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University, were short-listed after appraisal by experts. A joint design working group between these two institutions subsequently improved and perfected the final designs in accordance with suggestions put forward by BOCOG and local and international experts.
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad – Beijing 2008 will take place from 8 to 24 August 2008. The Games in Beijing will play host to the 28 summer sports currently on the Olympic programme. Approximately 10,500 athletes are expected to participate in the Games with around 20,000 accredited media bringing the Games to the world.
