A new Gangwon 2024 Organising Committee President appointed
On 27 November 2023, Gangneung native and former Chairman of the Financial Services Commission (FSC) Choi Jong-gu was appointed as President of the Organising Committee (YOGOC) for the upcoming Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Gangwon 2024 at an official event in Seoul, Republic of Korea.
Speaking at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Choi said he was expecting to further elevate the Committee's effectiveness and create additional opportunities, not only financially but also in marketing, promotion and planning.
"Using my work experience over the years, I will try to make Gangwon 2024 the most successful Youth Olympics to date," Choi said. "This will be an important opportunity that will showcase South Korea to the rest of the world and help unite our people and young athletes from around the world."
Until now, the Organising Committee had been operating under the co-presidency of multiple Olympic gold medallists Lee Sang-hwa and Jin Jong-oh, who will continue supporting the promotional side of Gangwon 2024 and actively communicate with the young athletes.
A new seven-member Advisors Group will also be joining the YOGOC to support Gangwon 2024 on a daily basis. This Group is planning to expand the scope of preparations for the YOG and increase awareness of the Games and audience engagement. The Group includes Yeo Hyung-koo, former PyeongChang 2018 Secretary General, and Kim Jae-youl, International Skating Union President.
The Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 will be held between 19 January and 1 February 2024, and will benefit from the legacy of the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 by using some of the same facilities. Some 1,900 athletes from around 81 National Olympic Committees are expected to take part. The previous Winter YOG took place in January 2020 in Lausanne, Switzerland.
