2017 IOC Medical and Scientific Research Fund: Apply now!

07 Jul 2017

Calling all applicants! The IOC Medical and Scientific Commission opens applications for its Research Fund in line with its mission to support and protect clean athletes.

Committed to protecting clean athletes for the sake of the future of sport and for the protection of athletes’ health, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), through its Medical and Scientific Commission, is calling on researchers to apply for support and funding of athlete-centred projects.
What is the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission looking for?

Multi-centre collaborative projects which aim to deliver research in the areas of injury- and illness-prevention, as well as anti-doping research for the protection of clean athletes. These proposals should have the potential to directly benefit Olympic athletes. Funding of selected projects is in principle limited to a financial contribution of USD 100,000.

The deadline for applications is 15 September 2017.

Areas that are not eligible for the IOC Anti-Doping Research Fund include:

  • funding the work of commercial companies;

  • routine programmes that are part of normal athlete medical support and anti-doping programmes (e.g. training of medical or doping control personnel); and

  • research that should be the responsibility of other bodies (e.g. National Olympic Committee education seminars by Olympic Solidarity).

The strategy for the distribution of this research fund is to complement, but not duplicate, existing research programmes. The priority is then innovative and novel research on injury- and illness-prevention, or anti-doping, which have the potential to have a direct impact on the health and safety of athletes.
Protecting athletes’ health and fighting against doping are top priorities for the IOC and its Medical and Scientific Commission, as outlined in Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement.
