Hautes-Pyrénées
David Adam will carry the Olympic torch. This is his story:
Peyragudes, which basked in the light of the Olympic torch back in 1968, just happens to be David’s birthplace and stomping ground as a ski instructor. Every winter, he co-leads and energises Kids Bulle, an association recognised as being in the public interest that provides children aged 3 to 16 with a multifaceted sliding experience, from skiing to snowboarding, including avalanche search training and interacting with other age groups. David instils in young people an enthusiasm for sports and the principles of respect (for themselves, others and their surroundings) and friendship.
The Olympic torch also stands for David's long-standing dedication as a volunteer firefighter for 16 years in the Hautes-Pyrénées department. Once again, being a role model and having a strong esprit de corps take centre stage: onboarding and training young firefighters is crucial. Over the last 8 years, to step up his dedication to this support mission, he has been part of the water rescue division of the Hautes-Pyrénées, a crack team consisting of 15 out of the department's 1,400 firefighters.
Fuelled by his ambition to excel, David has recently embarked on training for his first marathon. Running for the Olympic torch will be a memorable highlight in this personal challenge. Carrying the torch is about spreading values from city to city. For David, it is a moment laden with symbolism, representing a generation of children he mentors in Alpine sports and the balance between competition and respect, as well as a hat-tip to the firefighters of Hautes-Pyrénées.
