Founded in 1913, the FFLDA aims to promote and develop wrestling and the associated disciplines of sambo, grappling and gouren. Presided by Lionel Lacaze, it has over 26,000 members. Although men's wrestling was one of the original events of the Ancient Games, women's wrestling was added to the Olympic programme in 2004. Three events are on the programme for the Olympic Games Paris 2024: women's wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling and freestyle wrestling, which have different rules.
Representing the values of meeting, friendship and universality, wrestling has always been a part of the Games. Through this Relay, the Federation also wishes to promote a discipline that is both traditional and profoundly modern.
The Flame connects us to times gone by. Like the breath of life, it is the humanism that inspires us. From the very first Games, timeless and universal wrestling has contributed to the foundations of Olympia. We welcome with honour the duty of passing on the fusion of ‘Flame and Wrestling'.
Team Relay in Dijon, July 12.
Dijon is a stronghold of wrestling in France. The CREPS Bourgogne Franche-Comté is home to the French youth wrestling centre. Brothers Steeve and Christophe Guenot, Olympic medallists in 2008, trained there, first as athletes and then as coaches for the 2024 generation.
Wrestling is a long-established part of the city, and the Flame will be showcased in Dijon through the diversity of the people involved, on an urban route that will also pass through a dedicated wrestling venue.
One of the three French pioneers selected for the Olympic Games in 2004, Relay captain Angélique Berthenet, a European and world medalist, is involved on a daily basis, passing on her experience as a coach to young people.
Carrying the Olympic Flame and being one of the captains is a great honour and a great responsibility. It is an opportunity to promote the Olympic values of peace, friendship and respect, and to make a modest contribution to the success of the Games in France, 20 years after I took part.
For the first time in the history of the Games, each day of the Olympic Torch Relay and Paralympic Torch Relay, relay teams of 24 people, made up of champions, everyday athletes, volunteers, referees, coaches, etc. will be organized to spread the energy of sport and teamwork throughout the country.
