Founded in 1989, the French Triathlon Federation (FFTRI) took a decisive step forward in 2000 with the inclusion of triathlon in the Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, propelling the discipline towards worldwide recognition.
The year 2016 was also significant with the inclusion of Para triathlon in the programme of the Paralympic Games in Rio, enabling the FFTRI to open up to inclusion and diversify its practices. Today, the FFTRI has more than 60,000 members in 975 clubs, with more than 300 triathlon or Raid schools, and more than 1,000 events every year.
The Olympic Torch Relay is an opportunity to highlight our local structures and thank our members by involving them in the event.
This is the beginning of the dream, the commitment of the country and its regions to this great Olympic adventure.
Team Relay in Valence, June 20.
We will be in Valence and we will be working with the local club, which promotes inclusion in an area that has been awarded the “Terre des Jeux” label. The club has a 3-star triathlon school and organises triathlon events.
The Olympic Torch Relay captain, Joseph Kerdo, has been the volunteer President of the Valence Triathlon Club for nearly 10 years. Passionate about sport, he and his team work hard to develop both recreational and competitive sport. Joseph enjoys passing on the values of hard work, humility and honesty through sport, particularly to the younger members of the triathlon school.
As we pass through Valence, the flame will illuminate the three triathlon disciplines (swimming, cycling and running) for eight minutes. We will also be highlighting transition, which plays a key role in our sport.
For the first time in the history of the Games, each day of the Olympic Torch Relay and Paralympic Torch Relay, relay teams of 24 people, made up of champions, everyday athletes, volunteers, referees, coaches, etc. will be organized to spread the energy of sport and teamwork throughout the country.
