France Judo

Founded in 1946, the French Federation of Judo and Associated Disciplines now has 530,000 members in 5,200 affiliated clubs. A competitive sport, judo has won 52 World Championship titles, 48 Olympic medals, including 16 golds, and 15 Paralympic medals, including four golds. As an educational martial art, judo has trained 200,000 black belts. Some 17,000 instructors supervise judo and its associated disciplines in the dojos. The major projects developed are training with the Dojo Academy, regional initiatives with the Itinéraire des Champions [Champions’ Itinerary] and the 1,000 Dojos programme, and sporting initiatives with the Paris Grand Slam and the Judo Pro League.

The Olympic Torch Relay symbolises the transmission of the Olympic legacy, with values that judo shares and puts into practice on a daily basis.

Paris will be hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games for a 100th anniversary celebration of friendship and sharing. With its two team Olympic Torch Relays, the French Judo Federation is fully committed to and associated with this initiative, which is in harmony with the principles of judo.

Strasbourg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and hosts major judo events, including the European tournament at Geispolsheim, the European Cup at Rhenus Sport, Franco-German training courses and the Pôle France.

The Relay captain will embody youth, tradition and the values of sport and Olympism: respect for coaches, opponents and partners, without whom nothing is possible, excellence and friendship, because the world of sport is a second family on which we can rely.

Olympism is a philosophy. The Olympic Games are the Holy Grail for any sportsperson, and we are honoured to be hosting them in France! The Torch Relay will enable everyone to experience a part of the Olympic Games. It is a tradition that should be preserved, as it marks the opening of the Games!
