Founded in 1942, the FFME promotes and develops six sporting activities in France, including climbing, Para climbing and ski-mountaineering, for which the Federation has received ministerial delegations. Presided by Alain Carrière since 2021, the FFME has 115,000 members. Climbing was included in the Olympic Programme as an additional sport at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, with a combined event of its three disciplines. It will also be on the programme for Paris 2024 with two events (speed and combined bouldering/difficulty).

The Olympic Torch Relay is a fantastic opportunity to continue the inclusion of climbing in the Olympic Movement and its great moments. Indeed, climbing is a young discipline on the Olympic Programme and the FFME is keen to show as many people as possible the diversity of its sporting activities at artificial and natural venues.

Climbing, a fast-growing sport, made its entry at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. For our Federation, the Torch Relay is a fantastic opportu- nity to anchor it a little more firmly in the Olympic tradition, while celebrating the diversity of its practices over two stages, in a natural setting and indoors.

Dating back to 1871 and the Franco-Prussian War, the Usine Escalade is a former cannon and munitions production site. Converted into a sports hall in 2022, it houses one of the largest facilities in Europe, with an Artificial Climbing Structure (ACS) entirely modelled by the FFME.

We have designed a Relay showcasing the three disciplines of climbing. From bouldering to speed and difficulty, the Flame will allow the general public to discover the different facets of climbing.

The Relay captain, Lila Samani, is a young athlete from Tarbes. A member of the French youth team at the tender age of 16, she is taking part in the European circuit in her age category.

The Olympic Games in France are perhaps a once-in-a-lifetime event. It is an honour to be able to take part in this great Olympic celebration in this way.
