Wu breaks 500m world record for third time in a year
The short track Olympic champion claimed his second World Cup win of the season in Salt Lake City.
PyeongChang 2018 short track gold medallist Wu Dajing smashed his own world record as he claimed the 500m event in Salt Lake City, USA.
The 24-year-old from China clocked a sensational 39.505 sec, clinching his second World Cup win of the season at the ISU World Cup.
It's the third time this year that Wu has set a world record. He did it twice on his way to Winter Olympic victory in South Korea.
"I'm very happy. A year's training has gone into this world record", the Olympic champion said, according to ISU.
Lim Hyo Jun from Korea and Shaoang Liu of Hungary also went below the 40-second barrier, and their times would have been enough to win any of last season's World Cup races.
Liu and his brother Shaolin Sandor went on to win more silverware as Hungary claimed both the 2000m mixed relay and the men's 5000m relay.
"I hope we get the title of 'Kings of the relay now!", Shaolin joked.
Morozov and Xu set swim records in Tokyo
Vladimir Morozov extended his lead at the top of the FINA Swimming World Cup rankings.
The 26-year-old Russian was the best performer at the penultimate leg of the season in Tokyo, winning four events.
After claiming victories in the 50m and 100m freestyle, and in the 50m fly, Morozov then equalled his own world record in the 100m IM (50.26 sec, set in September).
The other highlight of the event was Chinese swimmer Jiayu Xu setting a new world best in the men's 100m backstroke.
The Rio 2016 silver medallist was more than three-tenths quicker than world record pace at 50 metres, turning in 23.76, before coming home in 48.88.
That was just 0.02 sec inside the mark set by Kliment Kolesnikov in St Petersburg last December.
Nishikori shocks Federer
For the fourth time in his career, Roger Federer lost his opening match at the ATP Finals.
The 37-year-old Swiss was defeated 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 by world number nine Kei Nishikori.
The 20-time Grand Slam winner hit 34 unforced errors and was warned by the umpire for swiping a ball into the stands.
Federer will be back in action on Tuesday to face Dominic Thiem.
The Austrian lost to South Africa's Kevin Anderson in his first match at the O2 Arena in London.
