Chinese table tennis players swept both the singles titles at the WTT Star Contender Goa 2023 on Sunday.
World No. 4 Wang Yidi brushed aside Chinese Taipei’s Cheng-I-Ching, the world No. 31, by a 4-0 (11-6,11-6,11-8,11-4) margin to secure the women’s singles crown at the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Indoor Stadium in Panjim.
Wang Yidi’s win, her second straight WTT Star Contender title after her triumph at Budapest in July last year, confirmed the singles sweep for China as the men’s singles final was an all-Chinese affair. Liang Jingkun, the world No. 7, beat 17-year-old compatriot Lin Shidong 4-2 (11-6,9-11,10-12,12-10,12-10,11-9) in a tense men’s singles title decider.
The Japanese pair of Miyu Nagasaki and 14-year-old Miwa Harimoto, meanwhile, won the women’s doubles title with a comfortable 3-0 (11-9,11-7,11-6) win over the Chinese Taipei’s Cheng and Li Yu-Jhun.
“This is my first time winning a WTT women’s doubles title, I am really very happy,” Miwa Harimoto, who lost the mixed doubles final to the Korean pair of Jang Woojin and Jeon Jihee on Saturday, said after the match.
The South Korean pair of An Jaehyun and Cho Seungmin took the men’s doubles crown, ensuring Korea matched China with two titles in Goa. The duo beat Japan’s Shunsuke Togami and Yukiya Uda 3-1 (11-3,9-11,12-10,11-4) in the final match of the tournament.
The Star Contender Goa was the first-ever WTT event held in India.
