WST Street Skateboarding Rome 2023: Richard Tury leads Horigome Yuto, Shane O'Neill and Chris Joslin through to quarter-finals
The Slovakian finished top of the pile in the Men's Open Qualifier as 182 skaters were cut to 27. Manny Santiago and Angelo Caro among those to miss out on the quarter-finals of the Paris 2024 qualification event.
Richard Tury flashed remarkable consistency to come out on top in the Men's Open Qualifier at WST Street Skateboarding Rome 2023 event on Thursday (22 June).
The 30-year-old from Slovakia put down the two highest run scores of the day (66.33 and 66.03) to qualify in first place in a field 182 skaters deep.
Coming in just behind Tury in second and third place were Sasaki Toa of Japan (64.39) and Brazil's Carlos Ribeiro (62.92).
Sasaki was one of the seven skaters from Japan, including Horigome Yuto, to punch their ticket to the quarter-finals. The Olympic champion qualified in fifth (61.93).
Tokyo 2020 bronze medallist Jagger Eaton is also set to feature in tomorrow's quarters after taking the ninth spot (58.99) in the qualifier. The world park champion was the highest finisher from the USA, which saw six skaters through, including Chris Joslin (54.26) and Dashawn Jordan (48.16).
Australian pair Shane O'Neill and Tommy Fynn qualified in 10th and 24th respectively.
Among those who failed to get inside the top 27 were Olympians Manny Santiago and Angelo Caro.
Watching on from the sidelines were pre-seeded skaters Nyjah Huston, Aurelien Giraud, Gustavo Ribeiro, Onodera Ginwoo and Kelvin Hoefler who bypassed the Open Qualifier owing to their position in the Olympic World Skate Rankings.
They will enter the fray during tomorrow's qarter-finals which will begin with the women at 12:55 local time (UTC +2).
In addition to the title, Paris 2024 Olympic qualification ranking points are also on the line for skateboarders competing in Rome.
