World champion Shirai Sora cruised his way to the top of the men’s semifinal at skateboarding's WST Dubai Street 2024 event on Sunday (10 March).

After yesterday's semifinal was postponed due to adverse weather conditions, it was decided the two-45-second run - best run counts - format would be used for the semifinal to allow time for the final also later today.

The 22-year-old Japanese skater put down a ‘safe’ first run to score 78.92 points before stuffing the second with upgrades including the ‘Sora' grind - alley-oop frontside 180 fakie 5-0 - to rocket up the leaderboard into first place with a 92.03.

Trailing Shirai was Slovakia’s Richard Tury (88.88), Portugal’s Gustavo Ribeiro (85.34) and Japanese world runner-up Netsuke Kairi (84.52).

Horigome Yuto was among those who were not able to advance to the final. The Olympic champion failed to put a clean run down on his first attempt and his second scored only 71.90, meaning he finished in ninth, missing the cut by 0.13 points.

Vincent Milou, who had topped both the open qualifier and quarterfinal, also failed to advance.
