The World Fencing Championships 2023, one of the five competitions that offers qualifying points for the Paris 2024 Olympics, is scheduled to take place in Milan, Italy from July 22 to 30.
Fencers from over 150 countries will compete in the foil, epee and sabre categories, both in individual and team events at the Milan Convention Center (MiCo). Live stream will be available on Olympics.com.
The individual events will run from July 22-27 while the team events will be held from July 27-30.
A 24-member Indian fencing team, led by Olympian Bhavani Devi, will compete in all 12 events at Milan 2023.
The Milan competition is the only world championship to fall in the Olympic fencing qualifying ranking window, which started on April 3, 2023, and ends on April 1, 2024.
Bhavani Devi, currently ranked 28th in the world, is the only Indian fencer to compete at Olympics. The 29-year-old represented India at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Last month, Bhavani Devi won India’s first-ever medal at the Asian Fencing Championships after beating the reigning world champion and world No. 1 Misaki Emura of Japan in the quarter-finals for the bronze.
India, however, are yet to win a medal at the world fencing championships since it began in 1921.
