A 43-member Indian team will participate in the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to August 31.

A total of 23 Indian athletes will feature in men’s events and 20 in women’s competitions. India will also race in the 4x400m mixed relay race.

Live streaming of the World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 will be available in India.

Dipanshu Sharma, the reigning Asian U20 champion in the men’s javelin throw, will be in the spotlight from the Indian athletics team in Lima. India won seven gold medals at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships, held in Dubai in April this year.

Anurag Singh Kaler (shot put), Ranvir Singh (3000m steeplechase), Harshit Kumar (hammer throw), Pavana Nagaraj (long jump), Ekta Dey (3000m steeplechase) and the women’s 4x400m relay team also bagged gold medals at the Asian U20 Athletics Championships four months ago. They will compete in the track and field events in Lima as well.

Bapi Hansda, notably, will take part in the 4x400m relay and the 400m events after recovering from dengue. An Asian U18 Athletics Championships silver medallist, Hansda missed the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in April.

At Cali 2022, India won two silver (Selva Thirumaran in triple jump and mixed 4x400m relay) and one bronze medal (Rupal Chaudhary in 400m). Rupal, incidentally, had become the first Indian to win two medals at the same edition of the World U20 Athletics Championships.

The United States finished atop the medal tally at Cali 2022 with 15 medals - seven gold, four silver and four bronze.

Many Indian athletes have starred at the World U20 Athletics Championships over the years. Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion, was the first Indian to win a U20 title. He registered a junior javelin world record effort of 86.48m to win gold at Bydgoszcz 2016.

Sprinter Hima Das is the other Indian to secure a gold medal in the competition, winning the 400m race at Tampere 2018.
