The World Athletics U20 Championships 2024 in Lima, Peru, ran from August 28-31 with India fielding 43 Indian athletes, comprising 23 men and 20 women, for the four-day track and field competition.
The Indian contingent returned with one medal, a bronze, won by Aarti with a U20 national record. She clocked 44:39.39 in the women’s 10,000m race walk.
Indian athletes broke a few other national records as well.
Sharuk Khan (men's 3000m steeplechase) and Pooja Singh (women's high jump) both set national U20 records to in their respective events. Sharuk Khan then broke his own record in the final.
The men’s 4x400m relay team of Rihan Chaudhary, Ankul, Abiram Pramod and Jay Kumar too set an U20 national record in the heats to qualify for the final. The Indian quartet missed out on the medal after finishing sixth in the final.
The women's 4x100m relay team too see a new national U20 record but the effort was't enough to make the cut for the final.
All seven gold medallists from the Asian U20 Athletics Championships, held in Dubai in April were in action at Lima 2024. Asian U20 champions Dipanshu Sharma (javelin throw), Anurag Singh Kaler (shot put) and Ranvir Singh (3000m steeplechase) were among India’s top prospects in Lima but could not finish on the podium.
Bapi Hansda, India’s first silver medallist in boys 400m hurdles at the Asian Youth Athletics Championships, raced in his first competitive event since June this year and finished 46th in the 400m heats with a timing of 51.26s. The 18-year-old Indian sprinter had missed the Asian U20 Athletics Championships in April.
Two years ago, India won two silver (Selva Thirumaran in triple jump and mixed 4x400m relay) and one bronze medal (Rupal Chaudhary in 400m) at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia.
