Javelin throw star Neeraj Chopra and steeplechaser Avinash Sable will headline a 27-member strong Indian contingent at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary, from August 19 to 27.

India’s contingent for the Budapest World Athletics Championships comprises 23 men and four women.
Asian men’s shot put record holder Tajinderpal Singh Toor, men’s high jump national record holder Tejaswin Shankar, women’s 20km race walk national record holder Priyanka Goswami, men’s javelin thrower Rohit Yadav and runner KM Chanda had also qualified for Budapest23 but pulled out.
Barring Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo Olympics men’s javelin throw champion and world championships silver medallist from Oregon22, and Avinash Sable, the men’s 3000m steeplechase national record holder, women’s 100m hurdles sensation Jyothi Yarraji, long jumpers Murali Sreeshankar, Jeswin Aldrin and Shaili Singh and triple jump trio Abdulla Aboobacker, Praveen Chithravel and Eldhose Paul will be the other Indian medal hopefuls in Budapest.

Indian athletes have won only two medals at the World Athletics Championships. Anju Bobby George became the first when she won a long jump bronze at Paris 2003.
Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal at Oregon 2022 last year ended a 19-year-long wait for the second Indian podium finish at the world athletics championships.
