Tokyo Olympics champion Neeraj Chopra will be chasing history at the World Athletics Championships 2023 when he steps onto the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary for the men’s javelin throw final on Sunday. The final will be live streamed.
On Friday, India's Neeraj Chopra had topped the qualifying round with a season’s best throw of 88.77m to book his berth in the 12-man final.
Neeraj Chopra is an Olympic, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Diamond League and U20 world champion but a gold medal at the senior world championships has eluded the 25-year-old javelin throw ace so far.
The Indian athlete came close to becoming the first Indian world champion in any athletics discipline at the 2022 world championships in Oregon but eventually Chopra had to settle for a silver medal after finishing behind Grenada’s Anderson Peters.
It was, however, India’s first-ever silver at the World Athletics Championships and the country’s second medal at the global showpiece after Anju Bobby George’s long jump bronze at Paris in 2003.
Neeraj Chopra will go into Budapest 23 finals with an eye on clinching that elusive gold medal - both for his country and personal medals cabinet.
Anderson Peters’ failure to make it past the qualifiers will hand Neeraj Chopra an added boost in his quest for a historic world title.
The Indian thrower, however, will still need to overcome a strong field which features Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, and Julian Weber from Germany - the European champion and world No. 2.
India’s Manu DP, a silver medallist from the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, and Kishore Jena have also qualified for the medal round. This will be the first time in history that three Indians will be competing at a world championships final together.
