World Athletics Championships 2023 day five preview and schedule – Wednesday 23 August
Discover the highlights and schedule for Wednesday, 23 August 2023, Day 5 of the World Athletics Championships Budapest 23 in Hungary, featuring Karsten Warholm, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and Katie Moon in finals action, and Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson in 200m heats.
World record holder Karsten Warholm is in finals action on Wednesday 23 August, Day 5 of the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
The Norwegian, unbeaten in his last 12 meets, will hope to regain his men's 400m hurdles world title after struggling with injury last season and failing to make the Worlds podium.
However, his counterpart world record holder in the women's 400m hurdles, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, will not be in women's 400m flat action. Having originally decided to focus on the flat over the hurdles, the American withdrew from the Championships citing a knee injury a week before the event began. Instead, Dominican Olympic silver medallist Marileidy Paulino is the favourite in a final which also includes the sub-49.5 Europeans Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland and Natalia Kaczmarek of Poland.
Before that, Warholm's comptatriot Jakob Ingebrigtsen is the favourite to claim the men's 1500m crown. Despite looking ragged in the semi-finals, the Norwegian still had time to play up to the crowd as he came from behind to win his semi-final race. Defending champion Jake Wightman is out through injury leaving the European record holder and Olympic champion as the most likely winner.
Katie Moon and the rest of the women's pole vault field compete in the night's only field event final.
Earlier in the morning session, the men's and women's 200m will begin with the heats. American pair Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson are aiming to book their places safely in the semi-finals as their quest for triple sprint gold resumes.
