World Athletics Championships 2022: Injured Amoj Jacob pulls out of Indian relay team
Amoj Jacob will most likely be replaced by fellow Tokyo Olympian Arokia Rajiv in India’s men’s 4x400m quartet.
India’s men’s 4x400m relay team for the World Athletics Championships 2022 suffered a setback after Tokyo Olympian Amoj Jacob pulled out due to a hamstring injury.
Amoj Jacob had run a personal best of 45.68s in the men’s 400m race to win the national inter-state meet last month. The time was India’s fastest this season and the third-best Asian time in men’s 400m of 2022.
However, while competing in the 4x400m mixed relay team at the same competition later, Amoj Jacob suffered a hamstring injury and had to be carried off the track on a stretcher.
Last year, Amoj Jacob, along with Arokia Rajiv, Muhammed Anas Yahiya and Noah Nirmal Tom clocked 3:00:25 to create an Asian record at the Tokyo Olympics.
Amoj Jacob was included in the Indian team for the world athletics championships and the Commonwealth Games 2022 subject to his fitness.
However, with Amoj Jacob pulling out before Monday’s fitness and final selection trials, he will most likely be replaced by Arokia Rajiv in the India’s men’s 4x400m relay team for the world athletics championships.
Quarter-miler Aishwarya Mishra and long jumper and national record-holder Jeswin Aldrin have also been called up for Monday’s selection and fitness trials.
The World Athletics Championships will be held in Oregon, the USA from July 15 to 24. Anju Bobby George's women's long jump bronze in 2003 remains India's only medal at the world athletics championships.
