Indian archers will take aim to grab Paris 2024 Olympic quotas at the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin, Germany, from Tuesday.
The week-long archery event at the Olympic Square in Berlin will be the first Olympic qualifiers for Indian archers. The Berlin meet will offer 24 quota places for Paris 2024.
The three best-placed recurve teams in both the men’s and women’s categories will earn three quota places each, accounting for 18 (nine for men and nine for women) of the 24 quotas on offer.
The highest-ranked individual recurve archers from contingents which did not make the top three in team events can also earn six (three per gender) quota places for their countries. A maximum of one quota will be awarded per country on the basis of individual performances.
India have sent 12 archers for the World Archery Championships. The Indian recurve team will be spearheaded by Ankita Bhakat, who made it to the quarter-finals at the last edition in 2021.
Dhiraj Bommadevara, who won an individual bronze at Stage 1 of the Archery World Cup 2023 in Antalya, will lead Indian men’s recurve team.
The World Archery Championships will also see competitions in compound archery. Compound archery is not part of the Olympic programme.
Asian Games gold medallist Abhishek Verma, world championships silver medallist Jyothi Surekha Vennam and 17-year-old Aditi Gopichand Swami, who won a gold medal at the World Archery Youth Championships earlier this month, will be the top Indian compound archers to watch out at the Berlin world championships.
India have won a total of 11 medals - nine silvers and two bronze - at the world championships since 1931. India won three silver medals at the 2021 edition. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, apart from winning an individual silver medal in women’s compound, was part of the silver medal-winning women’s and mixed compound teams.
Over 500 archers from 81 nations will compete at the World Archery Championships 2023 in Berlin.
