Australia finished the first World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup 2024 at the Chinese National Aquatic Center in Beijing with two silver medals and one bronze on Sunday.
Competing at the venue used for the Beijing 2008 Olympics, Australia clinched silver medals in team technical and team free events and won the bronze medal in team acrobat on the final day of the competition.
Australia’s team technical squad, featuring Tokyo Olympians Carolyn Buckle and Kiera Gazzard along with Georgia Courage-Gardiner, Raphaelle Gauthier, Margo Joseph-Kuo, Anastasia Kusmawan, Zoe Poulis and Milena Waldmann, claimed the silver medal with 229.11 points on Friday.
The Australian team outscored the People’s Republic of China in total difficulty but the hosts fared better in impression and execution to take the top spot with a difference of 21.15 points. Kazakhstan scored 208.6020 points for bronze.
The same line-up barring Raphaelle Gauthier, who was replaced by Natalia Caloiero, finished second in the team free event behind China. The Chinese team registered 343.34 for gold with Australia 125.25 points behind. Only two teams competed in the event.
On the final day of the competition, Australia’s team acrobat claimed bronze with a score of 196.62. Kazakhstan (138.48) and China (124.48) won gold and silver, respectively.
In other events, Australia’s Carolyn Buckle and Georgia Courage-Gardiner finished eighth in the women’s duet technical, which featured 11 competitors.
The Beijing meet was the first of the four in the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup 2024 series. The series will travel to Paris, France in May, to Markham, Canada in May-June before wrapping up with the super final in Budapest, Hungary in early July.
