The 2020 edition of the Hero Women’s Indian Open golf has been called off, the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI) has said.

“It was a very difficult decision, but the right one under the present circumstances of the ongoing pandemic,” WGAI President Kavita Singh said in a statement.

“With no likelihood of any respite in the foreseeable future, safeguarding the health and well-being of all players, officials and spectators is of paramount importance. We hope to return next year with another stellar edition.”

The Women’s Indian Open golf, a part of the Ladies European Tour (LET) and Ladies Asian Golf Tour, had been scheduled for March 19-22 this year but was postponed for six months, and was slotted in for October.

However, it has now been cancelled considering the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country.

History of Women’s Indian Open

The first edition of the Women’s Indian Open golf was held in 2007, and it was co-sanctioned by the LET three years later.

The tournament, which was supposed to hold its 14th edition this year, has been played at the Gary Player course at the DLF Golf and Country Club (G&CC) in Gurgaon every year.

It was briefly shifted to the Delhi Golf Course for two years in 2013 and 2014, during which the DLF G&CC was being re-designed.

Rio 2016 Olympian Aditi Ashok was the first Indian golfer to win her home tournament in late 2016, with the victory being even more special as it was her first win on the LET after turning pro earlier in the year.

Thai golfer Pornanong Phatlum has the most titles at the Women’s Indian Open golf with three - 2008, 2009 and 2012 - while she finished runner-up in 2011.

Austrian Christine Wolf won the 2019 edition, her first title at the event, after beating Marianne Skarpnord of Norway in the final.
