The Women’s Premier League 2024 is scheduled to begin at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru on Friday. The five-team WPL 2024 will be held from February 23 to March 17.
Defending champions Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, will take on last year’s runners-up Delhi Capitals in the opening encounter of the second season of WPL.
While 11 matches will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, from February 23 to March 4 during the first leg, the remaining 11 matches will be held at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi from March 5 to 17. The final will be played on March 17 in Delhi.
All WPL matches will be live streamed and be available live on TV channels in India.
Besides Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants are also part of the women’s T20 cricket tournament.
Top cricketers from around the world like Meg Lanning, Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney (Australia), Kate Cross (England), Sophie Devine (New Zealand), Amelia Kerr (New Zealand), Nadine de Klerk (South Africa) and Hayley Matthews (West Indies) will be seen in action during India’s premier T20 cricket competition for women.
Indian stars include MI captain Harmanpreet, Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, Shafali Varma, Shikha Pandey, Richa Ghosh and Deepti Sharma to name a few.
In the inaugural Women’s Premier League 2023, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals for the title. While Delhi Capitals’ Lanning bagged the Orange Cap as the highest run-getter, Mumbai Indians’s Hayley Matthews’ 16 wickets earned her the Purple Cap.
All eyes, however, will be on Royal Challengers Bangalore who bagged seven players during the WPL mini auction, held in December 2023. RCB finished fourth on the table last year. UP Warriorz, meanwhile, finished third last year.
With the arrival of Beth Mooney, who missed the last season due to injury, Gujarat Giants will be aiming to start from scratch. After finishing at the bottom in 2023, the Giants hired the services of Michael Klinger as head coach for better results.
