Women’s National Boxing Championships 2023: Saweety Boora, Manju Rani sail into semi-finals 

Sonia Lather (57kg), Ankushita Boro (66kg) and Jaismine (60kg) also assured themselves of a medal by reaching the semi-finals in their respective categories.

World champion Saweety Boora, along with Manju Rani and Sonia Lather stormed into the semi-finals of the Women’s National Boxing Championships 2023 in Greater Noida on Tuesday. 

Competing at the GBU Indoor Stadium, Saweety Boora continued her dominance in the 81kg weight category with a win via RSC (referee stopped contest) over Saie Davkhar. Saweety Boora’s semi-final opponent Bhagyabati Kachari also beat her opponent Saitejaswini Maineni in a similar fashion.

Defending champion in the 48kg category, Manju Rani, a world championships silver medallist, claimed a dominant 5-0 win over Sanjana in the quarter-final bout. The Indian boxer is now set to face Minakshi in the semi-finals.

Sonia Lather, also a world championships silver medal winner, set up her semi-final clash with Mandeep Kaur after defeating Vinakshi Dhota 5-2 in the quarter-finals of the 57kg division. Mandeep Kaur defeated Preeti 4-1 to book her place in the last four.

In the 60kg division, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Jaismine beat Poonam Kaithwas via RSC to reach the semi-finals. She will face Menka Devi, who secured a 4-1 split decision quarter-final victory over PS Girija in her quarter-final bout.

The 63kg category saw Sonu claim a 5-2 win against the 2022 national champion Shashi Chopra. Sonu will take on Rinky Sharma, who got the better of Muskan Rana 5-0 to reach the last four.

Youth world champion and Asian championships bronze medallist Ankushita Boro registered a 5-0 victory over Anjali Tushir in the 66kg category. Boro’s semi-final opponent Deepika also had a convincing 5-0 win in the quarter-finals against Rekha.

Over 300 boxers are competing across 12 weight categories at the seventh edition of the women’s national boxing championships. The finals will be held on Wednesday.

Anamika (50kg), Jyoti (52kg), Shiksha (54kg), Anupama (70kg), Nandini (75kg) and Nupur (81+kg) are also among the boxers who have guaranteed at least a bronze medal at the national championships by reaching the semi-finals.
