India will compete in the 10-nation Women’s Junior Asia Cup 2023 hockey tournament in Kakamigahara, Japan from June 2 to June 11.
The Indian junior women’s hockey team and four other national sides - People's Republic of China, Korea, Japan and Malaysia - received a direct entry to the Under-21 hockey tournament courtesy of their world rankings.
The remaining five countries - Kazakhstan, Hong Kong China, Chinese Taipei, Uzbekistan and Indonesia - qualified through the Women’s Junior AHF Cup held in Taldykorgan Kazakhstan in October last year.
The eighth edition of the Women’s Junior Asia Cup will be live streamed in India.
India are placed in Pool A, along with Malaysia, Chinese Taipei, South Korea and Uzbekistan. Meanwhile, Pool B comprises hosts Japan, Kazakhstan, Hong Kong, Indonesia and defending champions China.
After a single-legged round-robin stage, the top two sides from each pool will move on to the semi-finals while the third and fourth-placed teams will play for the fifth to eighth-rank classification. The teams that finish fifth in both pools will compete against one another for the ninth and 10th spots.
The top three nations from the tournament will qualify for the FIH Women’s Junior Hockey World Cup 2023.
South Korea, with four titles, and three-time champions China are two of the most successful nations at the Women's Junior Asia Cup.
India have never won the Women’s Junior Asia Cup. Their best performance came in 2012 when they finished runners-up and have also been on the podium four other times.
