Serbian tennis great Novak Djokovic and rising star Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will clash in the Wimbledon 2023 men’s singles final on Sunday.
Novak Djokovic, the world No. 2 in the latest ATP tennis rankings, is bidding for his eighth Wimbledon crown, which will see him equal Swiss legend Roger Federer as the most successful men’s singles player at the grass court Grand Slam.
A win on Sunday will also see the 36-year-old Novak Djokovic equal Margaret Court's all-time (across Open and Amateur Eras) record of 24 Grand Slam crowns.
Novak Djokovic is also a four-time defending champion at Wimbledon. Only Bjorn Borg and Roger Federer have won five successive men’s singles titles at the All England Club before.
Novak Djokovic secured a spot in the Wimbledon 2023 final, his 35th Grand Slam summit clash, with a 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win over Italian Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals on Friday.
Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, entered his maiden Wimbledon final with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over Daniil Medvedev in the other semi-final.
Carlos Alcaraz will be playing in his second Grand Slam final. The USA Open 2022 was the Spaniard’s first Grand Slam title. Alcaraz came into Wimbledon 2023, having won the title at the Queen’s Club Championships, his first grass court trophy.
Novak Djokovic won the first two Grand Slams of the season - the Australian Open and the French Open. Interestingly, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz faced off in the semi-finals of the French Open last month, where the Serbian triumphed over the Spaniard 6-3, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. Djokovic went on to win the Roland Garros crown by beating Casper Ruud in the final for his 23rd Grand Slam title.
In the head-to-head records, both players are tied at 1-1 with Carlos Alcarz beating Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid last year.
The Wimbledon 2023 women’s singles final on Saturday, meanwhile, will pit Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova, the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, against Tunisia’s world No. 6 Ons Jabeur.
Jabeur will be a returning finalist at the Centre Court, having lost the 2022 title clash to Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
