Indian tennis player Rohan Bopanna and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden advanced to the pre-quarterfinals of the Wimbledon 2023 men’s doubles competition on Monday.
Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, seeded sixth at the grass court Grand Slam, registered a 7-5, 6-3 straight-set second-round win over the unseeded British pair of Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday.
The pair of Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden made a subdued start to the match and trailed 1-3 against the local pair early on. The Indo-Australian pair, though, found their rhythm and rallied to make it 4-all. Despite a brief resistance from the British duo, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden kept control of the match and pocketed the first set.
The second set was a more straightforward affair. Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden made a breezy start and raced to a 4-1 lead. The pair of Jacob Fearnley and Johannus Monday tried to edge back into the contest but the Indo-Australian pair snuffed off the challenge and sealed their place in the third round.
Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden, who won the Qatar Open and Indian Wells earlier this year, will play the Dutch-American pair of David Pel and Reese Stalder in the pre-quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Earlier in the tournament, Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden defeated the Argentine pair of Guillermo Duran and Tomas Etcheverry in the opening round.
However, the 43-year-old Rohan Bopanna, partnering Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski, crashed out of the mixed doubles event after going down in the first round on Sunday.
Indian tennis players Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni, too, made an early exit from Wimbledon 2023 after losing their opening-round match of the men’s doubles event.
Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and N Sriram Balaji also bowed out after losing their men’s doubles opener on Saturday.
Ankita Raina was the only Indian in the singles event. The 30-year-old crashed out in the opening round of the qualifiers.
