Can Coco Gauff win back-to-back major tennis titles?
The reigning US Open champion will try to do just that over the coming two weeks in Melbourne at the Australian Open, four months after her maiden Grand Slam singles win in New York.
Japan's Naomi Osaka, who is set to play her first major since giving birth in July, is the last woman to win the US and Australian Opens back-to-back, doing so in 2020-21.
American Gauff is seeded fourth, and will face world No.67 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia. Gauff is 2-0 vs. Schmiedlova, having most recently beaten her in the fourth round at Roland-Garros last year. The 19-year-old Gauff won her first tournament of the year in Auckland, New Zealand, a seventh career title in eight final appearances.
The first round of the AO gets underway Sunday (14 January), with Gauff set to mee Schmiedlova on Day 2, Monday (15 January) first up on Rod Laver Arena court at 12pm local Melbourne time (AEDT).
