Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic made it four victories in the 2024 Vuelta a España on Sunday (8 September), joining Roberto Heras as the most successful rider in race history.

The 79th edition of the men's Grand Tour stage contest across Spain started in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, the second time the Spanish stage race started in its neighbouring country after it hosted La Vuelta's first-ever international start in 1997

After over 3,300km (2,050 miles) of racing over 21 stages in Europe's Iberian Peninsula, the race ended as per tradition in Spain's captial Madrid.

Of the 21 stages, two were individual time trials - including the finale in Madrid - eight were classed as high mountain stages, five as medium mountain stages, five as hilly or uneven stages, and just one as a flat stage.

Roglic had three stage wins including on Stage 19 where he seized the overall race leader's red jersey from Australia's Ben O'Connor. He was second behind Stefan Küng on the closing time trial to finish over two and a half minutes clear in the general classification.

Defending champion Sepp Kuss of the United States was 14th. Kaden Groves secured the green points jersey with fellow Australian Jay Vine winning the King of the Mountains classification. Denmark's Mattias Skjelmose won the best young rider jersey after taking fifth overall.

Sunday 8 September: Stage 21, Distrito Telefónica, Madrid – Madrid - Küng takes stage win as Roglic completes victory

The 21st and final stage of the 2024 Vuelta a España culminated in a 24.6km individual time trial in Madrid with Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ) claiming the top step on the podium with a time of 26:28.

Primoz Roglic came into the final stage with a lead of just over two minutes and needed to finish without any incident to hold on to the red jersey.

The 34-year-old Slovenian did just that as he finished the time trial in second place to claim a record-tying fourth Vuelta a España title.

Roglic wrested 'La Roja' from Australia’s Ben O’Connor with an impressive victory in stage 19. O’Connor, who had taken the lead from Roglic on stage six, held on for second place and his best finish on a Grand Tour. Home rider Enric Mas took third overall.

Saturday 7 September: Stage 20, Villarcayo – Picón Blanco - Dunbar attacks late to claim Queen stage

Eddie Dunbar held on to take his second stage win of this year's Vuelta on the summit of Picón Blanco.

King of the Mountains leader Marc Soler made a number of attacks with UAE Team Emirates colleague Jay Vine, who trailed him by just one point at the start of the day, staying in range. Soler toiled on the ascent of the Puerto de Los Tornos - the sixth of the stage's seven climbs - and the Australian managed to seize the blue and white polka dot jersey.

Then another UAE Team Emirates rider, Pavel Sivakov, attacked and built up a lead of a minute before the Picón Blanco. Despite his Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team-mates Dani Martinez, Nico Denz and Patrick Gamper all abandoning due to apparent illness, overall race leader Primoz Roglic was in the chase group with red jersey challengers Ben O'Connor, Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz.

With 5km to go, Dunbar tried to bridge the gap to Sivakov by himself. He caught the Frenchman just over 3km from the finish with Roglic pushing the pace a further 10 seconds behind. As Sivakov struggled to hang on to the Irishman's wheel, Urko Berrade and David Gaudu broke from the red jersey group.

Mas and Roglic increased the tempo, dropping O'Connor and Mikel Landa, with only Carapaz and Berrade able to go with them in pursuit of the leader.

Inside the final kilometre, Dunbar stretched his lead to 15 seconds. With 500m to go, he was within sight of the chasers but managed to stay clear to take the Queen stage. Mas crossed the line seven seconds later with Roglic just behind in third.

O'Connor rallied to take sixth place, just 14 seconds off the pace, but Roglic takes a lead of over two minutes into the final stage - the individual time trial in Madrid - as he closes in on a fourth triumph in the Vuelta a España.

Hot favourite and three-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic returned to the race lead of the 2024 Vuelta after a move on the final climb of Stage 19, ending on the Alto de Moncalvillo.

Sensing his general classification rivals in trouble on the difficult climb after a hilly day, the Slovenian made his move inside the final 5km of the ascent of the Moncalvillo as previous leader Ben O'Connor struggled once more.

The Aussie ended up losing nearly two full minutes on Roglic, who took his 40th career stage red jersey and now leads the standings by a minute and 54 seconds from O'Connor. Spain's Enric Mas, who attempted to bridge to Roglic but settled for fourth on the stage, is third overall.

Thursday 5 September: Stage 18, Vitoria-Gasteiz to Maeztu - Urko Berrade claims win after late attack

Wildcard team Equipo Kern Pharma claimed their third stage victory of the Vuelta on Thursday as Urko Berrade attacked his breakaway counterparts in the closing kilometres of a tricky medium mountain stage.

Berrade chose to go clear on the last unclassified hill and opened a gap of up to 10 seconds, and try as they might, the others with him were unable to bring him back.

Behind him, the favourites group had splintered on the category-one climb to Puerto de Herrera, with Vuelta defending champion Sepp Kuss and Mikel Landa among those dropped by the pack.

Race leader Ben O'Connor also found himself adrift, but managed to get back to the group including closest challenger Primoz Roglic thanks to the help of his teammates, and managed to hang onto the red jersey for one more day.

Wednesday 4 September: Stage 17, Arnuero to Santander - Kaden Groves takes sprint for third stage win

Wout van Aert's absence from the mountains and points classification was felt on Stage 17 as the peloton rolled through medium mountains from Arnuero to Santander, with two classified climbs and a flat sprint finish.

With the Belgian's withdrawal, the two jerseys were worn by Jay Vine and Kaden Groves respectively – in addition to Ben O'Connor leading the general classification, it marked the first time in Grand Tour cycling history that Australians had led the overall, mountains, and points classifications at the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France, or Vuelta a España.

And it was Groves, now the favourite to win the points jersey in Madrid on Sunday, who claimed victory at the end of the stage in Santander, bringing back a late attack with under 1km left to win in the rain.

O'Connor kept the overall leader's red jersey.

Tuesday 3 September: Stage 16, Luanco to Lagos de Covadonga - Soler solos to mountain win as Van Aert abandons after crash, Roglic closes in on red

An incident-packed Stage 16 saw the mountains and points classification leader Wout van Aert, winner of three stages this Vuelta, abandon the race after a crash. The Belgian joined the day's breakaway again looking for more mountains points, but after summitting the Collada Llomena crashed on the slippery descent in wet conditions.

He was assessed by the Team Visma | Lease a Bike doctor and was unable to continue in the race, giving up after a remarkable two weeks in the saddle during which he went on multiple breaks.

Eventually, it was breakaway companion Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) who attacked on the final climb to the Lagos de Covadonga with around 8km to go and soloed to victory.

Behind them, race leader Ben O'Connor was dropped on the difficult final climb by a group led by Primoz Roglic, with the Australian eventually losing 58 seconds to the Slovenian. If not for Roglic's 20-second penalty on Sunday, he would have taken the red jersey.

Pablo Castrillo was the man of the hour as he clinched stage 15 atop the Cuitu Negru for his second mountain stage win at this year's Vuelta. The Spaniard tried to break away 3km from the finish but was caught by Aleksandr Vlasov, and the two battled it out over the final kilometre of a grueling climb.

Castrillo eventually got the better of the Russian rider rewarding himself for his impressive effort all afternoon.

In the battle for the red jersey, Primoz Roglic managed to gain another 38 seconds on overall leader Ben O'Connor, but was subsequently penalised 20 seconds for illegally drifting behind the team car.

Friday 30 August: Stage 13, Lugo – Puerto de Ancares - Woods wins tough uphill finish as Roglic closes in on red jersey O'Connor

A tough 176km ride from Lugo ended on the ferocious Puerto de Ancares, a pure climb without any rest for the racers, and it was no surprise that the favourites let a breakaway go clear and gain more than 17 minutes at one stage.

From the front group, Canadian national champion Michael Woods went clear with about 2.5km left on the ascent of the Ancares and soloed to a comfortable win.

But the action was yet to develop further down the mountain. Primoz Roglic, alongside Sepp Kuss, Enric Mas, and Mikel Landa dropped red jersey Ben O'Connor early on the climb, before Roglic himself attacked his compatriots with 2km to go and went clear.

The Slovenian three-time Vuelta champ made it to the summit some 10:54 behind Woods, but more importantly, a minute and 55 seconds ahead of O'Connor, more than slicing the Australian's lead in half from 3:16 to 1:21.

Thursday 29 August: Stage 12, Ourense Termal to Estación de Montaña de Manzaneda - Pablo Castrillo claims emotional stage win

For the third straight stage, the day's breakaway made it all the way to the end as Equipo Kern Pharma's Pablo Castrillo took an emotional victory at the mountaintop finish at Manzaneda.

His victory came a day after the team's founder, Manolo Azcona, passed away, with the team's riders and some former riders holding a memorial in the morning before the stage began in Ourense.

On the short 137.5km ride to Manzaneda's mountain station, the break finally went clear with around 100km to go and Castrillo attacked to go solo with just under 10km left of the final climb to Manzaneda, making it alone by eight seconds from Max Poole.

The general classification favourites marked each other to the line, finishing 6:30 down on the stage winner.

Wednesday 28 August: Stage 11, Padrón to Padrón - Breakaway triumphs again as O'Connor loses time

It was a day for the breakaway riders on a stage that both started and ended at the Campus Tecnológico Cortizo in Padrón, with four categorised climbs on the day.

A big group of 37 made it up the road and got out to over six minutes before the peloton upped the pace after the first of two ascents of the Puerto Aguasantas.

On the final mountain of the stage, a climb of the Puerto Cruxeiras, both the breakaway and the favourites group broke apart: Victor Campenaerts (Lotto Dstny) attacked from the leading group but lost ground to a three-man counter-attack which summited the climb ahead of him; while around four minutes behind them, Primoz Roglic and Enric Mas attacked, with red jersey Ben O'Connor being dropped from the GC group.

The lead group regrouped on the final downhill heading back into Padrón, while Roglic and Mas opened over 20 seconds to O'Connor.

As the finish line neared and the front group crossed under the 1km-to-go flag, the pace was upped. Ireland's Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-AlUla) attacked for the line with around 650m to go and held off the chasers to claim a dramatic victory.

Behind them, Roglic's group crossed the line over four minutes down, with O'Connor a further 40 seconds behind.

Tuesday 27 August: Stage 10, Ponteareas to Baiona - Wout van Aert picks up another stage win from breakaway

Wout van Aert took his third stage win of the Vuelta after dominating the breakaway on a mountainous day with four categorised climbs before a relatively flat finish into Baiona.

The Belgian was the first to clear the opening climb, which began nearly from the start of the stage, and was eventually part of a five-man group that made it clear of the peloton.

By the time he reached the final Alto de Mougás, the Visma | Lease a Bike rider had just Quentin Pacher (Groupama-FDJ) for company. Van Aert went over the top first then sat in his French companion's wheel all the way to the finish line, launching a sprint with 150m to the line.

However, Pacher had no legs to respond, and Van Aert was able to let up after just 25m of sprinting, cruising the remaining 100m to take another win and move level with Adam Yates for the lead in the mountains classification on 22 points.

The favourites group finished over five and a half minutes down, with Ben O'Connor maintaining his overall lead.

The shortest leg of this year's Vuelta saw Slovenia's Primoz Roglic claim his career's 14th stage win as he gained nearly a minute on leader Ben O'Connor.

Thursday 22 August: Stage 6, Carrefour Jerez Sur, Jerez de la Frontera to Yunquera - Ben O'Connor wins from breakaway to take overall lead

Australian Ben O'Connor (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) rode into the leader's red jersey with a magnificent solo victory from the breakaway on Stage 6 to Yunquera and the uphill finish at the Alto de las Abejas.

The day's breakaway got together around 70km into the 185.5-km stage, from which O'Connor, an outside general classification hopeful, went clear alongside Gijs Leemreize at 120km to go.

O'Connor then left his breakaway companion with a solo attack near the end of the stage with 27.5km remaining, riding clear and adding time on the peloton to make up for his 1:56 deficit to overnight leader Primoz Roglic.

The Australian's victory makes him the fifth Aussie to have won stages at all three Grand Tours, adding to his prior wins on the Tour de France in 2021 at Tignes and Giro d'Italia the year before that at Madonna di Campiglio.

His margin of victory was 4:33 to the nearest chasers, with the main GC group coming in 6:31 down.
