Vinicius Junior and Aitana Bonmatí were crowned as the men’s and women’s Player of the Year respectively at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2024.

The pair received their accolades at the football awards night in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday (17 December), voted for by national team coaches and captains, members of the global media and fans.

Vinicius, or ‘Vini’, guided Real Madrid to the Champions League and LaLiga titles last season, having also won the Super Cup and the Supercopa de España in 2024.

The Brazilian has been one of the standout players for the Spanish giants, and he will have a chance to add a fifth major honour of the year when Madrid take on Mexican side Pachuca in the Intercontinental Cup final on Wednesday (18 December).

Bonmatí was a key cog in the FC Barcelona side that also won a major double with the Champions League and Liga F titles, scoring in the final to secure their third continental crown.

It caps off a dream year for the Paris 2024 Olympian, having won the Ballon D’Or in October and now collecting the top FIFA individual award, both of which the midfielder has won for the second year in a row.

On the topic of Olympians, the legendary Marta was the recipient of the inaugural eponymous accolade, the Marta Award, which celebrates the goal of the year in women’s football.

The men’s equivalent is the Puskas Award, and that was won by Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho for his stunning overhead kick in their 3-0 Premier League win against Everton in November 2023.

At the awards ceremony in Qatar, the men’s and women’s teams of the year were also announced.

The men’s XI featured three players from Euro 2024 winners Spain: Ballon D’Or winner Rodri, captain Dani Carvajal and young player of the tournament Lamine Yamal.

In the women’s XI, the Paris 2024 gold medallist trio of Alyssa Naeher, Naomi Girma and Lindsey Horan earned a callup to the top women’s team of the year.
