Vinesh continues fine run, wins gold in 53kg category

Vinesh Phogat is the fourth awardee to test COVID-positive

One of India’s established grapplers, Vinesh Phogat, continued her fine form this season winning a gold medal at the Poland Open wrestling tournament in Warsaw on Sunday.

Competing in the 53kg category, the 24-year-old was in her zone as she fought past local hope Roksana with a 3-2 verdict in the summit tie.

This is her third title since moving into the 53kg category early this year.

The Haryana wrestler had won the top honour at the Grand Prix of Spain and at the Yasar Dogu International at Istanbul, Turkey last month.

At the Poland Open, Vinesh had earlier beaten Sweden’s Sofia Mattson, the 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist, in the quarterfinals.

Eye on Worlds

The Indian is preparing for the Wrestling World Championships to be held in Kazakhstan later this year.

The Worlds will have as many as six quota places for Tokyo 2020 on offer and Vinesh will be looking to seal her place at the quadrennial event after having seen her Olympic dream reach an abrupt end at Rio 2016 where she was forced to forfeit her quarterfinal bout midway due to a career-threatening injury.
