The United States Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) have announced the departure of head coach Vlatko Andonovski after four years in charge.

The news was confirmed on Thursday (17 August), with Twila Kilgore named as interim coach of the USA's women.

In search of a 'three-peat' of titles at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023, the back-to-back reigning Champions crashed out in the Round of 16 with a dramatic penalty shootout against longstanding rivals Sweden.

Prior to Australia & New Zealand 2023, the USA's worst performance at football's most prestegious tournament had been a third-place finish.

After a disappointing group stage outing that saw them come second in the pool table behind the Netherlands, Zećira Mušović's fine display in goal for the Swedes forced a shootout in which leading stars Megan Rapinoe and Kelley O'Hara both missed from the spot.

This knockout blow comes two years after Canada denied them a chance at winning gold at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021. The USA went on to secure bronze.
