Wednesday (6 March) will see one of women’s soccer's great rivalries come to fruition once more, as Canada takes on the USWNT in the CONCACAF W Gold Cup semi-final.
While head-to-head history may make this clash look like the opposite of a rivalry, it doesn’t stop the players from treating it as one all the same.
The USA have bested the Canadians more often than not since their first coming together in 1986, but the latter prevented their opponents from achieving gold at the last Olympic Games in Tokyo, knocking them out in the semi-finals of that tournament. Canada went on to wi ngold at Tokyo 2020 beating Sweden 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out.
In more recent enounters, however, the USWNT resumed their regular form over the Canadians.
All is to play for in the Gold Cup, though, proof in Mexico recording a first-ever win over the United States to pip them to the top of their group.
Canada, meanwhile, are unbeaten in the competition, coming through their group stage with three wins from three and a narrow victory over Costa Rica in the quarter-final.
Ahead of what promises to be an enticing clash, Olympics.com assesses the head-to-head record between the two…
Canada v USWNT: When was the last time these two met?
Almost an exact year ago was the last time the USA took on Canada.
The pair met in the annual SheBelieves Cup, which the hosts (USA) went on to win 2-0, courtesy of a Mallory Swanson, formerly Pugh, double in the first half.
It marked a tough showing for the Canadians, who despite beating Brazil, were outclassed in the final game against Japan, losing 3-0.
Before that, the two contested the 2022 CONCACAF W Championship final, in which an Alex Morgan penalty sealed the win and the USA’s spot at the 2024 Olympic Games.
Canada v USWNT: Team USA holds the upper hand
There is no denying that the United States are the heavyweight of this fixture. Canada has scarcely got the better of their rivals, managing just four wins in 64 meetings between the two.
These two nations first met in 1986 and since then, the USA has tallied an incredible 53 victories in those meetings, playing out seven draws.
It is a contest that has seen goals aplenty - at least on the American side, that is. The USWNT has racked up 187 while conceding a significantly lesser amount of 40.
The last time the Canadians beat the USA was at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, held in 2021, when they went on to top the podium.
With yet another piece of silverware at stake, perhaps this will spur them on to record another rare victory.
