USWNT star Alex Morgan has announced her retirement from professional soccer in a video posted to social media.
Following the news that she is pregnant with her second child, the prolific goal scorer will hang up her boots later this month.
Her final game will be on Sunday (8 September), when the San Diego Wave take on North Carolina Courage.
“It has been a long time coming and this decision wasn’t easy,” she said in the video.
“But at the beginning of 2024, I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer.
“I have so much clarity about this decision and I am so happy to be able to finally tell you all.”
The 35-year-old concludes an epic 15-year career that has seen her become a two-time World Cup winner and an Olympic gold medallist.
Her success extends to her domestic career, where she has won a plethora of accolades, including a treble on loan at Lyon.
She ends her USWNT career with 123 goals, ranking fifth in the nation’s all-time top scorers.
“I grew up on this team, it was so much more than soccer,” said Morgan, in a U.S. soccer press release.
“It was the friendships and the unwavering respect and support among each other, the relentless push for global investment in women’s sports, and the pivotal moments of success both on and off the field.
“I am so incredibly honoured to have borrowed the crest for more than 15 years - I feel immense pride in where this team is headed, and I will forever be a fan of the USWNT.”
