USA's William Shaner wins 10m Air Rifle Men with new Olympic Record

William Shaner has become the new Olympic champion in the 10m Air Rifle Men beating People's Republic of China's SHENG Lihao (250.9) to set a new Olympic Record.

It was nerves of steal from the 20-year-old American, who finished with a score of 251.6, after leading for majority of the final. He is the second youngest gold medallist in the event.

"We've been trying to get a medal in this event for a long time...so it was nice to bring it back home now," Shaner said.

YANG Haoran (229.4) of People's Republic of China, who finished first in the qualification round, settled for bronze after being eliminated by fellow team mate Sheng.

It is the second time China has won two medals in the men's 10m air rifle at an Olympic Games, the last time this happened was at Athens 2004.

Not only is Sheng the youngest medallist in Olympic Shooting history at just 16 years and 233 days, but it proved to be his maiden senior medal.

World no.1 István Péni of Hungary, who finished seventh to qualify for the final, was eliminated by Turkey's Omer Akgun and finished fifth in the final. Meanwhile, world no.3 USA's Lucas Kozeniesky, who finished 21st place in Rio 2016, placed sixth.
