USA Basketball reveals star-studded roster for Paris 2024 Olympic Games
USA Basketball have announced their Men's National Team for Olympic Games Paris 2024, as the most successful nation in Olympic basketball history seeks a fifth consecutive (and 17th total) gold medal.
The star-studded list was released on Wednesday (17 April), exactly 100 days before the Olympic Opening Ceremony. Team USA's men's roster is full of NBA & Olympic champions, MVPs, and multi-time All-Stars, headlined by LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, and Joel Embiid.
LeBron James returns to national team for Paris 2024
James makes his return to Olympic competition 8 years after winning gold with Team USA at Rio 2016. The four-time NBA champion also won gold at London 2012 and bronze at Athens 2004.
On Tuesday (16 April), the 39-year-old guided the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA Play-In Tournament victory over the New Orleans Pelicans to set up a first-round playoff matchup with the defending champion Denver Nuggets.
Kevin Durant's quest for Olympic history
Durant set the record for most points scored in USA men's Olympic history at Tokyo 2020 in 2021, surpassing Carmelo Anthony's previous record of 336. Durant, aged 35, now sits on 435 points, and he could achieve more history at Paris 2024 by breaking a tie with Anthony for the most gold medals — 4 — won by a male basketball player at the Olympic Games.
Speaking to Olympics.com ahead of the draw for the basketball comeptition at Paris 2024, Anthony said of Durant and James:
“[Kevin] Durant has the chance to establish himself as one of the pinnacle players of USA Basketball. LeBron [James] of course has been there with me from 2004 all the way to 2012, so now hopefully he has a chance to come back and do it, I would say, one last time and give the fans what they want to see."
Steph Curry & Joel Embiid poised to make Olympic debuts
Curry, a four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, will play in his first Olympics when he steps on the court at Paris 2024. The Golden State Warriors point guard has previously represented the USA in international competition at the FIBA World Cup (winning two gold medals) and was expected to play at the Rio 2016 Games but withdrew due to knee and ankle injuries.
These Games will also be the first for Embiid, whose decision over which nation to represent at Paris 2024 (Embiid, who was born in Cameroon, holds dual citizenship between the USA and France) was fiercely anticipated last year. In October, the 2023 MVP announced his committment to play for Team USA.
