Rafael Nadal has 22 Grand Slam wins to his name, which is the most by a men’s tennis player. The four-time US Open champion will equal the unmatched tally of 23 by Serena Williams in the Open Era if he manages to win the title this time.
Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal, the top two seeds in the men’s singles at the US Open, will be challenged by an in-form Nick Kyrgios, who’s jumped 100 spots since February and now sits at 37 in the ATP Rankings.
Among other top contenders in men’s singles at US Open will be Spain’s 19-year-old sensation Carlos Alcaraz, the French Open 2022 finalist Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas. All three players are yet to win a Grand Slam.
Three-time US Open champion Novak Djokovic, who defeated Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final last month, will be the biggest absentee at Flushing Meadows since the US government does not allow unvaccinated foreigners enter the country.
Roger Federer is still recovering from an injury that he sustained last year and will not play at the US Open.
World No. 2 Alexander Zverev will also be missing from the US Open as he is nursing an ankle injury he suffered during the French Open semi-finals against Nadal in May.
Among women, Serena Williams needs one more Grand Slam title to equal the record of 24 Grand Slam wins by Margaret Court.
However, having lost five of her last six matches, the six-time US Open champion will have her task cut out with defending champion Emma Raducanu, Wimbledon 2022 finalist Ons Jabeur, world No.1 Iga Swiatek and last year's runner-up Leylah Fernandez also in the fray.
Serena Williams will also be seen in action with her sister Venus Williams for the first time since the 2018 French Open. The pair has won three Olympic gold medals in addition to 14 Major doubles titles.
The US Open 2022 will see a 128-player singles draw, 64-team doubles draw (men and women) and 32-team mixed doubles draw. The doubles draw will be announced on Monday.
