While Sumit Nagal is in singles action, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will take the court in the men’s doubles event at the US Open 2020.

Indian tennis players Sumit Nagal, Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan will be in action at the US Open, which got underway at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Monday, August 31. Tennis fans in India can watch the broadcast live on TV and live streaming of the Grand Slam online.

Sumit Nagal, currently India’s top-ranked men's singles player, will take on world No.3 Dominic Thiem in the second round on September 3 after beating US tennis player Bradley Klahn 6-1, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the opening round.

The Indian had created waves at the US Open last year after taking a set off Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer,

Veteran doubles players Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan, meanwhile, will be the Indian representatives in the US Open doubles event, albeit with different partners.

Rohan Bopanna and his Canadian partner Denis Shapovalov have been handed a favourable draw in men's doubles and will take on the American duo of Noah Rubin and Ernesto Escobedo in the first round.

Divij Sharan and his Serbian partner Nikola Cacic, meanwhile, face a sterner test against the eighth-seeded men’s doubles team of Netherlands’ Wesley Koolhof and Croatia’s Nikola Mektic.

Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams to play US Open

Due to concerns around the COVID-19 pandemic, several big names like reigning champion Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Nick Kyrgios and others pulled out of the tournament. Roger Federer is sitting out due to an injury.

The women’s event, too, will be missing some high-profile players like world No. 1 Ashleigh Barty, No. 2 Simona Halep, and others like Elina Svitolina and Belinda Bencic – all of whom are in the WTA top 10.

Indian doubles ace Sania Mirza will not play in the US Open due to safety concerns.

Despite the depleted roster, US Open 2020 will still feature some top names in tennis. World No. 1 men’s player Novak Djokovic is the top seed in the tournament ahead of Dominic Thiem.

Big names like Andy Murray, Alexander Zverev, and Marin Cilic will also be in New York.

On the women’s side, 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams will be the biggest draw.

Top seed Karolina Pliskova, Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin and Naomi Osaka will be the other star names to watch out for.

Set to be played in a biosecure bubble as a safeguard against the COVID-19 pandemic, this US Open will be the second Grand Slam of the year after the Australian Open.
