The Ultimate Table Tennis 2023, featuring some of the top international players, will start at Pune’s Balewadi Sports Complex on Thursday.
The Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), founded in 2017, was last played in 2019. The table tennis league has been cancelled multiple times due to COVID-19 and is making a comeback after four years.
UTT Season 4 will see six teams - Bengaluru Smashers, Chennai Lions, Dabang Delhi TTC, Goa Challengers, Puneri Paltan Table Tennis and U Mumba TT - compete for the top prize.
Each UTT squad comprises six players - four Indians and two foreign players.
Chennai Lions, led by Commonwealth Games champion Sharath Kamal, will be the defending champions. Puneri Paltan have world No. 22 Omar Assar of Egypt in their ranks
Debutants Bengaluru Smashers have India’s No. 1 women’s singles player Manika Batra in their team. U Mumba is spearheaded by world No. 18 Aruna Quadri of Nigeria.
Dabang Delhi, the 2018 champions, have India’s top-ranked men’s singles player Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and national champion Sreeja Akula in their ranks. Goa Challengers have Asian Games and Commonwealth Games medallist Anthony Amalraj and Thailand’s world No. 40 Suthasini Sawettabut in their setup.
A total of 18 ties will be played in UTT Season 4 in a single-legged round-robin league format. Live streaming and telecast will be available in India.
Each team will play five ties in the league stage. The top four teams will qualify for the semi-finals on July 28 and 29. The UTT final will be played on July 30.
