Paris 2024

Reigning world and Olympic champion Joe Choong leads a strong home team, but athletes from Italy, Republic of Korea, Egypt and France will be among those trying to stop the British charge with six Paris 2024 quota spots potentially up for grabs in Bath.

The 2023 UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Championships take place in England's historic Roman city of Bath from 21-28 August with quota places at Paris 2024 at stake.

The crowds will be expecting strong showings from British athletes on home soil with Olympic champion Joe Choong defending the individual title he won last year in Egypt.

Two members of Britain's triumphant women's team from last July, Choong's partner Olivia Green and Jessica Varley, will also be seeking more medals

Republic of Korea topped the medal table in Alexandria with Olympic bronze medallist Jun Woong-tae claiming men's relay and mixed relay golds. His mixed relay partner, Kim Sun-woo, also won women's team silver and women's relay bronze.

Italy is a nation to keep a close eye on with Elena Micheli winning individual gold last year and taking victory in June's UIPM World Cup Final in Ankara.

Her teammate Alice Sotero took gold at July's European Games in Krakow with Giorgio Malan beating Choong to the men's title.

Egypt won women's relay gold and men's relay silver on home soil last year with Mohanad Shaban set to challenge for individual honours after winning the men's event in Ankara.

Athletes from all-time top nation Hungary are also very much respected with Michelle Gulyas bidding to upgrade her silver from last year, and Csaba Bohm a perennial contender in high-profile events.

The French will defend their men's team title while Elodie Clouvel and Marie Oteiza are medal hopes in the women's events.

Mexico also has medal possibilities with Emiliano Hernandez taking the last spot on the podium at the World Cup Final, and Mariana Arceo and Mayan Oliver bidding to regain their women's relay title from 2019 after taking silver last year.

And don't write off 39-year-old Lithuanian Laura Asadauskaite, the London 2012 and 2013 world champion and Tokyo 2020 silver medallist, who produced her trademark blistering laser run to finish fourth at the European Games and secure her nation an Olympic quota spot.

There are up to six more Paris quota spots available in Bath at these World Championships. These will go to the top three in each of the men's and women's individual finals provided those athletes have not previously earned quota places at the World Cup Final or continental championships.

Each nation is limited to a maximum of two places per gender in Paris.

As National Olympic Committees have the exclusive authority for the representation of their respective countries at the Olympic Games, athletes' participation at the Paris Games depends on their NOC selecting them to represent their delegation at Paris 2024.
