UCI Cycling Road World Championships 2024: Remco Evenepoel retains men’s time trial title adding to his Olympic double gold
The Belgian continued his historic year by winning both the Olympic and world time trial gold medals in the same season with his victory in Zürich, Switzerland on Sunday (22 September).
Belgian superstar Remco Evenepoel crowned a spectacular season by successfully defending his world time trial title at the 2024 UCI Road World Championships in Zürich, Switzerland on Sunday (22 September).
Evenepoel added to rainbow jersey to his double gold from Paris 2024, becoming the first male, and only the second rider ever behind Grace Brown to win the Olympic and world title in the same year. Brown achieved the feat in the women’s time trial earlier in the day.
The 24-year-old Evenepoel made history at this year’s Olympic Games where he became the first man to win the road race and time trial gold medals at the same edition. To add to his phenomenal season in the saddle, Evenepoel finished third at the 2024 Tour de France.
Evenepoel had some nervous moments at the ramp with his chain coming off before his start with his team taking some time to fix it, but once he got underway the rider highlighted his dominance in Zurich by leading at the first, second, and third time checks on the 46.1km course before cruising to victory in a time of 53 minutes, 01.98 seconds (53.01.98). The Belgian sensation even had some time to celebrate his achievement shortly before the line.
Two-time time trial world champion Filippo Ganna was the second fastest at each point but could not find enough speed to get one over on Evenepoel. Ganna took silver, finishing just six seconds slower than Evenepoel for a 1-2 podium repeat of last year’s result.
Ganna shared the podium with Italian compatriot Edoardo Affini in third place, nearly a minute behind Evenepoel.
“It was a really tough day for me. My chain dropped with one minute before the start and I had no power metre so it was a pure time trial on feeling,” Evenepoel said afterwards.
“I was struggling over the last two kilometres. I pushed hard on the second little kick and I went all out on the downhill as well.
“In a time trial, especially at a championship, it doesn’t matter what the time gap is, I just saw my time in green and I felt like celebrating. Pretty good day again.”
