The Indian men’s football team will play its first match of the year against Myanmar in the Tri-Nation International Football Tournament 2023 at the Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal, Manipur, on Wednesday.
Sunil Chhetri and Co. will also play Kyrgyz Republic at the same venue on March 28. The Indian men’s football team was last seen in action in an international friendly against Vietnam in September last year. The Indian team lost 3-0.
The two matches are part of the Indian team’s preparation for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which begins in Qatar in January next year. Both matches will be live streamed.
India are currently ranked 106 in the FIFA rankings, while Myanmar and Kyrgyz Republic are 159th and 94th, respectively.
India head coach Igor Stimac has picked a 23-member squad and 10 reserves for the seven-day tournament.
Along with Bengaluru FC ace Sunil Chhetri, senior goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, defender Sandesh Jhingan and midfielders Jeakson Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte were named in the squad.
On Sunday, defender Pritam Kotal, who recently won the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 title with ATK Mohun Bagan, and forward Naorem Mahesh Singh were called up to the India camp in Kolkata, in place of Sivasakthi Narayanan and Glan Martins, who were initially picked in the squad but dropped due to injuries.
Most of the players arrived for the camp in Kolkata on March 16 while the others, who were playing in the ISL final, joined the squad after the camp shifted to Goa on March 18.
