The Minnesota native immediately reached out to the universe (via. Reddit) to help retrieve his prized souvenir… and Leon Jones answered his call.
Jones, aka. Doctor Rings & Things, is a treasure hunter and it didn’t take him long to do what he does best.
He took down the coordinates, found the ring using his metal detector and broke the good news to Landsteiner through a local TV station.
Good karma
Landsteiner had been in Los Angeles for the ESPY Awards and admitted to KTLA that he had been in tears the night he lost misplaced the ring at the beach.
However the next day he got a call from a KTLA reporter, asking to do an interview.
Eventually the penny dropped, so to speak, and the reporter informed Landsteiner that the ring had been found.
In return for finding his ring, the Team Shuster lead said he would fly back to California and take Jones out for dinner.
They say good things come in pairs, and that was certainly the case for this fortunate forager.
As can be seen on the video posted to his YouTube channel, before finding the Olympic ring Jones found a diamond ring!
U.S Olympic rings
Sterling silver rings are given to all U.S. Olympians and Paralympians, regardless of their performance at the Games.
The bespoke rings are sized at the team outfitting, then engraved with the athlete’s last name and event.
The rings can then be upgraded to 10-karat or 14-karat or even platinum gold, depending on what the individual wants.
The athletes receive the Olympic mementos upon their return at a USOC event in Washington D.C.
Because of this customisation, and the fact that Jones watched the Olympic curling final, he was able to quickly identify its owner.
Olympic triumph
Team USA shocked the world when they won the curling gold medal at PyeongChang 2018.
The team consisted of skip John Shuster, third Tyler George, second Matt Hamilton and lead Landsteiner.
The Americans upset Sweden 10-7 in a nail-biting eighth end to seal their nation’s first Olympic title in the event.
Despite curling being a relatively unknown sport in the USA, their exploits didn’t go unnoticed.
A raft of new fans were swept up in Landsteiner and co.’s icey exploits, best personified by Mr T’s outburst of support on social media.
