Tokyo Olympics, table tennis men’s singles: China’s Ma Long vs Fan Zhendong in gold-medal match, watch live

The top two seeds Fan Zhendong and Ma Long, both from China, will contest the table tennis men’s singles gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Lin Yun Ju of Chinese Taipei and Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany will clash for the bronze medal. Both matches will be played on Friday evening at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
Both Fan Zhendong and Ma Long had hard-fought wins in the semi-finals, winning in seven games each.
No. 1 seed Fan Zhendong defeated No. 5 seed Lin Yun Ju 6-11, 11-9, 14-12, 13-15, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8 in a marathon that lasted an hour and 25 minutes. No. 2 seed Ma Long beat No. 7 seed Dimitrij Ovtcharov 13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-9 in an hour and 21 minutes.
The 32-year old Ma Long had won the men’s singles gold at Rio 2016. Ma Long beat India’s Sharath Kamal in the third round on Tuesday. The other men’s Indian table tennis player, Sathiyan Gnanasekaran crashed out in the second round last Sunday.
Lin Yun Ju is in line for his second bronze at the Tokyo Olympics, having won bronze in mixed doubles with Cheng I Ching. Ovtcharov will be looking to add to the men’s singles bronze he won at London 2012.
